Interscholastic Climbing League

The Interscholastic Climbing League (ICL) provides a competitive climbing program for middle and high school students in the greater Chattanooga area. The purpose is to introduce 6-12 grade students to a challenging sport and lifelong activity in an environment that emphasizes communication, teamwork and positive social interaction without the competitive pressure often associated with traditional team sports.

After six successful seasons hosting the League that served and average of 250 student climbers each season, the pandemic forced us to hit the pause button in 2020. The pandemic combined with our limited resources as a small division within the City of Chattanooga, and the growing interest in the league over the past 6 years, we determined it was the right time to pass the league to High Point Climbing and Fitness in hopes they could properly support the league as it evolves and cultivate it as it continues to grow.

Terri Chapin, Outdoor Chattanooga’s Program Coordinator, and league founder expressed bittersweet feelings about the transition. “I’m sad to let the league go but felt it was time to pass it onto the local climbing gyms because they are better equipped to help the league grow to its full potential.” We are grateful to High Point for their willingness to keep the league alive and continue to give young people the opportunity to participate in a non-traditional sport! If you have questions about the transition of the league to High Point or are interested in participating in the league as a middle or high school student, please contact info@highpointclimbing.com.

Student climbers participate in six organized meets at the three local climbing gyms to represent their public, private or homeschool. Student climbers compete against themselves to improve in the sport and with their team to see how they rank amongst other climbers/teams in the league. Students don’t have to have prior experience to participate in the league.
