Tandem hang gliding allows beginners to fly to high altitude with a certified instructor by their side. Modern hang gliders are easy to fly and are very structurally strong. Modern hang gliders are certified to carry 6 g's of force, more than most airplanes. Tandem flights are about 15minutes in duration and fly to 2000 above the ground. The ability to fly with an expert allows the beginner to fly with confidence and enjoy the flight.
Modern hang gliders are very easy to maneuver and control. The great handling characteristics allow hang glider pilots to search for rising columns of air. The columns of air, called thermals, take the hang gliders, along with hawks, buzzards, butterflies and other surprising insects up thousands of feet in the air. Hang gliders have flown over 20,000 feet in altitude. The furthest recorded hang gliding flight is 438 miles.
Lessons are available which combine tandem flying with bunny hill training. The bunny hills allow newcomers to experience hang gliding from only several feet above the ground. Training involves practice from the bunny hills under a controlled environment with certified instructors.
