Whitewater Rafting. Whitewater Rafting is perfect for the outdoor enthusiast of any skill level. It is a sensible and fun introduction to whitewater paddling, as the first-time participant gets his feet wet (and probably everything else!) learning to negotiate whitewater with the help of guides on any trip. Two of the most incredible whitewater rivers are located right here in the greater Chattanooga area. The beautiful Ocoee River is the site of the 1996 Olympic Kayak Events.  The Hiwassee River, also known for its fishing and beginner whitewater paddling, is a popular and accessible river for first time rafters.

Rafting 101

What Should I wear?
Warm Weather - Bathing suits or shorts and a t-shirt. Wear river sandals or old tennis shoes.
Cool Weather - Wool socks and a wooly tight fitting cap. Capilene top and bottoms are recommended (the stuff that swishes when you walk). Wool is great. Do not wear blue jeans or sweats or other all cotton items. Wet suits are available for rent at your rafting outpost.

Is there an age limit?
The Tennessee State Parks Dept. requires all rafters to be at least 12 years of age.

Is Rafting Safe?
Your rafting guides and staff will do everything possible to provide you with a trouble-free river experience. The safety of our guests is the foremost concern of our staff. The sport of whitewater rafting has inherent risks that are beyond human control and must be assumed by the participant. Each rafting group will receive at least two safety briefings to make sure everyone is comfortable before putting on the river.

Notice: Whitewater rafting should be undertaken only by groups of individuals all of whom have proper training and adequate equipment. The information is provided only as a convenience for such individuals. Outdoor Chattanooga and all of the organizations and businesses mentioned within this area assume no liability for accidents that may occur in the pursuit of activities based on this information. The sole responsibility for safety lies with the participant.
