Rowing is a sport for all ages.  It provides an outstanding cardiovascular workout while consuming significant calories.  It engages major muscle groups without the impact stress that can be a challenge with other forms exercise. In Chattanooga, the rhythmic motion of rowing can be enjoyed in the beauty of the Tennessee River environment.

Rowing in Chattanooga has a rich history.  First started in 1876 it has grown to a sport involving high schools, private schools, universities, and recreational and Olympic rowers.

Chattanooga Rowing is the host organization of both the Lookout Rowing Club and the Chattanooga Junior High School rowing program.  Both organizations benefit from amenities offered by the William G. Raoul Boathouse located off the Amnicola Hwy.  The facility was built to support rowing in the Chattanooga community, as well as the Women's Olympic Rowing Team during the Atlanta Summer Olympics.

Fun Fact:
What is a "crab"?
A problem encountered by a rower when his or her oar gets 'stuck' in the water, usually right after the catch or just before the release of the oar in the water. The momentum of the shell can overcome the rower's control of the oar and in some extreme cases the rower can actually be ejected from the shell by the oar.
