Running. Chattanooga is one cool city. It's enclosed by rolling hills rife with Civil War history--including the monument-filled battlefields on edge-of-town Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge--this 2001 Outside magazine "Dream Town" of 163,000 (with metro area of a half million) is a jackpot destination for lovers of the outdoor life.

Local and visiting runners can easily find their way to a series of parks and pathways on the banks of the Tennessee River, which meanders along the city's northwest border. Just a little farther away: mountain trails galore. In other words, it's easy to find just about any kind of rubber-soled experience you'd want from a flatland cruise to high-up trail trekking...
